Recently when doing some studying on lessons that we can learn from Old Testament stories, I came across a piece entitled “All I need to know I learned from Noah’s Ark.” I want to share it with you, with a few of my own reflections about lessons that life, and God, have taught me.
1. Don’t miss the boat. It’s easy to be so caught up with the busyness of life, or with the things that we think are important, that we miss the true calling of God on our lives. It’s important to take a step back every now and then to ensure that we are on God’s itinerary.
2. Remember that we are all in the same boat. Plato once wrote, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” It’s important that we all extend a little grace and love to each other.
3. Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark. Proper preparation prevents poor performance. The Bible tells us to be ready in season and out of season. One way that we can stay prepared is to read the Word and pray on a regular basis.
4. Stay fit. When you’re 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. As women, it is so critical that we take care of our physical health. All of us are trying to successfully fulfill numerous roles in our lives: women, wife, mother, sister, daughter, church member, employee, community supporter, taxi driver, cheerleader, etc. There is no way that we can bear the weight of all that is placed upon our shoulders if we are not strengthening ourselves physically & spiritually.
5. Don’t listen to critics, just get on with the job that needs to be done. Even when you are doing the right thing, there will be those who criticize you. Just follow your heart and take comfort in knowing that you have God’s approval.
6. For safety’s sake, travel in pairs. Life is hard, don’t go it alone. Surround yourself with like-minded people who will support you, encourage you, and stand by you in the good times and in the bad.
7. When you’re stressed, float awhile. It ok, and often necessary, to take some time out and rest. When the pressures of life seem to be suffocating you, get out from under its grip. Invest some time in just “being” and not “doing”.
8. Remember the ark was built by amateurs, the Titanic by professionals. Don’t doubt your abilities and talents. When you’re on an assignment from God, you can be assured that He has equipped you with everything that you need to succeed.
9. No matter the storm, when you are with God, there’s always a rainbow waiting. This is the most amazing truth and assurance that we have in God. The Bible says, “all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” No matter what we are going through, we can be confident in knowing that He is with us and He is working all things out for our good. If we will stand on His Word and His Promises when we are going through the storm, He is faithful to bring us through with a greater reward than we could have ever conceived.
